Our Process

At Peak Antler Company, our designs don’t come off an assembly line. They begin with experience, evolve through craftsmanship, and finish with careful engineering. For more than 20 years, we’ve learned what works, what doesn’t, and how to create antler lighting that looks effortless in your space but is the result of thoughtful decisions at every stage.

The Foundation: Sourcing & Selecting Premium Antler

The foundation of any antler fixture is the material itself.

We work with a network of shed collectors and antler buyers across the Rocky Mountains,  from Texas to Canada, sourcing naturally shed antlers including mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, moose, and occasionally fallow deer. Each antler is selected for both visual character and structural integrity.

Antlers are graded into three categories based on moisture content and sun exposure:

  • Fresh brown (A grade) — strongest and most stable
  • Hard white (B grade) — structurally sound with natural aging
  • Chalk (C grade) — more brittle from extended exposure

For large chandeliers and structural builds, we use A-grade antlers to ensure long-term strength. Every finished fixture is sealed with a UV protective coating to preserve color and integrity indoors.

Material selection is not purely cosmetic; it’s a structural decision-making that affects the longevity of the piece.

Designing for Real Spaces: Scale, Style, & Structural Planning

Every custom piece begins with understanding the room it will live in.

We evaluate ceiling height, fixture placement, available lighting, design style, preferred antler type, finishes, and even access dimensions for delivery. These details allow us to design a fixture that feels intentional, not oversized, undersized, or visually disconnected from the architecture.

A simple sizing principle we often use is dividing room width into thirds to establish maximum fixture scale. This creates balance without overwhelming the space. For clients unsure about sizing, we often recommend building a temporary cardboard mock-up to visualize the fixture in real scale.

Because no two spaces are alike, custom design is never formula-driven; it’s guided by proportion, experience, and collaboration.

Once a design and quote are approved, we begin production with a 50% deposit, with final payment due before shipping.

Handcrafting the Fixture: From Raw Antler to Final Build

Each fixture is built by hand, beginning with selecting individual antlers that complement one another in shape and strength.

The structure is assembled using heavy lag fasteners and balanced before any wiring begins. Light placement is mapped carefully, and internal channels are drilled to route wiring discreetly through the antlers.

After wiring and socket installation, all drilled areas are filled and textured to match the natural surface. Color blending ensures repairs disappear visually. The entire piece is then sealed with UV protectant.

We rely on practical hand tools and rarely reuse jigs because every fixture is unique. At least four artisans handle each piece during assembly, wiring, finishing, and quality inspection to ensure consistency and craftsmanship.

Built to Hang Safely: Engineering, Weight, & Installation

Large antler fixtures must hang safely and reliably.

Every piece is weighed and documented before leaving the shop. We provide a custom mounting canopy and a detailed specification sheet including fixture weight, electrical components, UL listings, and installation guidance for electricians.

If ceiling reinforcement is required, installers can reference this documentation to prepare appropriate mounting support. Our team remains available to answer installer questions at any stage.

Architects and designers sometimes overestimate fixture weight or undersize a piece to reduce cost. Proper scale and realistic weight expectations ensure the final installation performs both structurally and visually.

Final Approval, Shipping Protection, & Long-Term Care

Most custom fixtures are approved during the mock-up phase before full construction begins. Structural and lighting decisions are finalized at that stage to protect safety and design integrity.

Each fixture is photographed for final client approval before crating. We build custom crates in-house for every shipment, resulting in a shipping damage rate of roughly cleated low single digits.

Indoor fixtures require no routine maintenance thanks to protective sealing. For outdoor or damp environments, periodic resealing preserves the finish. Rawhide diffusers benefit from occasional conditioning depending on climate.

Properly built antler lighting is designed to last decades — not seasons.
